Masonry Restoration Technician Training Program at Green-Wood
In New York City, restoration of historic buildings is booming. Yet, few people know how to get into this dynamic field. At Green-Wood, we’re doing our part to change that. Through the Bridge to Crafts Careers program, we present a unique and unexpected educational experience for young job seekers interested in the construction trades.
Participants in the program learn the basics of restoration and preservation, including stone cleaning, repair, and re-pointing, right here on the grounds utilizing our historic mausoleums. They are instructed by Green-Wood’s experienced restoration department and a master craftsmen from Local 1 Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers with support from the International Masonry Institute. Students receive the necessary training for entry level positions the field of masonry restoration.
The program is in presented in partnership with Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow, a social services and workforce development organization in Sunset Park. Funding comes from the World Monuments Fund, the NYS Regional Economic Development Council, the Achelis & Bodman Foundation, the McWhelan Fund and others.
We are thrilled to work with such talented young people while helping create a more diverse community of craftspersons in the fields of masonry restoration and construction.
